Children and Garage Doors, Safety tips to keep in mind
Garage Door Saftey is a big deal. This is especially true if you have children. The numbers of injuries and death to children due to garage doors every year is astonishing. Unfortunately, when childproofing a home, people rarely think about the garage door. Even if the door leading to the garage is secure this is an accident waiting to happen if you do not have a child safe garage door in place.
There are several options available to parents, grandparents and child care providers. Lets face it children are both curious and fearless. Accidents occur from children trying to ride the garage doors. Some have led paint, and there have been reports of injuries from the springs on older models as well as falling garage doors. These are some of many hazards involved. Over 13,000 children in the United States alone are injured or killed due to faulty garage doors or freak accidents. Most of these doors are 400 pounds or more. That is something to think about when the average child injured is maybe 30 to 90 pounds. Protecting these children is easy and affordable, and no one ever thinks it will happen to them.
Merely teaching a child is not enough to insure their safety. You should still instruct them, but it is important to update and child proof this area of the home. While parents install those little plug inserts in the electrical sockets many do not realize that the garage door kills more little ones each year than shock or water combined in the home.
It is a good idea to get with a garage dooe specialist. It may be a complete garage door replacement or a few simple tools that you need. It would be great if there were no needed repairs or replacements, but until you know it is a danger. You can test your devices often with a roll of paper towels. If the door does not stop when placed under it then you have a real serious problem. Do not delay finding out if your garage door is kid safe. Once something bad happens it cannot be taken back. Kids learn every day to open or unlock doors. They do not see the world as we do, so make sure the one they do see is safe. After all, if we do not protect them then who will?
