How to Reset a Garage Door Opener

How to Reset a Garage Door Opener

If you’ve recently purchased a garage door opener or remote, or if your previous remote was lost or stolen, you may be searching for a convenient method to reset your garage door opener remote. Most garage door openers are simple to reprogram, though note that the resetting process can vary based on your machine’s age, brand and model. By following the proper steps, you can enjoy safer and more effective garage door operations.

Reprogramming Your Garage Door Opener

Most garage door openers use radio frequencies or wireless technology, depending on the age and type of the opener, to recognize remotes. To begin resetting your garage door opener, you’ll want to locate your machine’s learn button. It’s most likely positioned on the back panel of your garage door opener. For most machines, the learn button will be a colorful square or circular button in red, yellow, orange, green or purple and situated near an LED light.

Once you’ve located your machine’s learn button, follow these steps to reset your garage door opener remote:

  • Press the learn button once, unless you have a newer LiftMaster opener with MyQ capabilities, then press the button two times.
  • After the button has been pushed, the LED light should light up. Within 30 seconds of pressing the learn button, push the button on the garage door remote you’re attempting to program.
  • Hold the remote button for at least three seconds. If the reset was successful, your garage door opener will either click, or you’ll notice a light flash.

How to Erase Recognized Remotes

Losing your garage door remote may be inconvenient, but it also poses a potential safety risk for your home — the lost remote could act as an easy, keyless entry for burglars or other intruders. If you’ve recently lost your garage door opener remote, avoid unwanted security concerns by erasing the programmed remote from your machine’s memory. When you reprogram your garage door opener and delete remembered remotes, your machine will forget all remembered remotes, not just the lost device.

To effectively erase your garage door opener’s memory, press and hold the learn button for at least six seconds, waiting for the indicator light to shut off. After the light has turned off, all codes will be removed from your opener’s memory. Once you’ve erased the opener’s memory, you can easily reconnect your existing or new remotes by reprogramming the garage door opener.
